Robert Grace isn’t just an exceptional vocalist and performer - when it comes to winning over the masses with his own music, it seems he has cracked the code: utterly relatable, often rather deep topics, wrapped into surprisingly joyful sounding and impressively catchy pop melodies. Tracks like “Fake Fine”, “Hate Me”, “Fckd In The Head”, and many more serve as impressive proof of the success of his “happy sad songs”, as the 30-year-old musician lovingly calls them. And just in time for spring, he’s about to deliver another example of his foolproof method: his newest single, “Casper”.
“‘Casper‘ is a track that’s loosely based on myself,” Robert explains about his new release, a song about chronically committing to plans days or weeks in advance, but then realizing when the day comes that you’d so much rather stay at home, watch tv, and be alone. “I feel like I’m just that friend who constantly says they’re gonna do stuff and then just ghosts everyone. Sometimes I don’t even mean to do it, it’s just I’m so bad at texting people back ... I’m literally the worst person for communicating with (through text).”
Kicking off with its witty catchline “My friends all call me Casper cuz I ghost them all the time”, the track opens up to quick and dramatic piano chords, building up a tension that finds a captivating release once the beat sets in with the first verse. As usual, Robert Grace’s lyrics are straightforward and tongue-in-cheek, and despite him singing about being dead inside, the song's overall feel is lightweight and cheery. A special feature on “Casper” are the pitched vocals that make for a sound reminiscent of a children’s choir.
“Casper” arrives on the heels of Robert Grace’s most successful single release to date: “Not OK” has accumulated over 18 million streams in just a few months. Before he was even signed to any record label, he managed to organically build a massive online following from scratch. Meanwhile, Robert has racked up 2.4 million followers on TikTok, where he was the most followed Irish Artist in 2022 (ahead of artists like Niall Horan & Dermot Kennedy), and thanks to hit singles like “Fake Fine” (25m streams) and “Hate Me” (nearly 16m streams), his various social media platforms are flooded with people begging him to release new music.
“Casper” by Robert Grace will easily pass as a popular radio track and is destined to find its way into curated playlists without a shadow of a doubt. The track is scheduled to be released via Sony Music / Columbia on May 12, 2023.
